Working as an Escort: Expectations vs Reality
29/03/2022Preparing for Your Glamour Shoot
01/07/2022I must start by saying it’s work with, not for. The agent should be working for you as much as you work for them, and so with makes more sense. But Google and all that means I had to put for in the title. Meh.
So you’ve decided you want to work as an escort and you’ve discounted doing it independently. You feel it’s too much hassle or you won’t be safe enough as an Indie, and escort agency work is your route in. What next? How do you choose a good escort agency? Whether that’s in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester or elsewhere in the country. Here are my tips on separating the wheat from the chaff.
Study the escort agency website thoroughly
Is it well-written? Has time and care gone into it? Does it load well on a computer/laptop browser and a mobile phone? Does the recruitment page make you feel you will be working with someone who appreciates you? How inclusive is the agency? Do they only seem to recruit cookie-cutter stick thin white models or are there a mix of body shapes and skin colours? Run some of the escort images through a reverse image search. Do they appear on stock photo websites? If they do, it’s best not to get embroiled with an agency that operates off deception. Finally, if you find the agency using the term party girl in their marketing, understand that they are talking about drug use being acceptable among their clientele. If that’s not OK with you (and I don’t recommend it is), then give that agency a swerve.
Ring the escort agency
Don’t just chat on whatsapp, ring and get a feel for them over the phone. A good agent should be prepared to chat with you before you send over any of your personal information. We all get such a better feel for someone speaking on the phone than we ever can via messaging. Make sure you’re comfortable with them and that they sound friendly and fair before you apply. Be wary of all agents, but especially males.
What’s the commission?
We publish our commission rate on our website, but most agencies do not and they can go as high as 40%. The phone chat is the time to find out how much of a cut the agent wants from you. If you think it’s too high, don’t be afraid to haggle! The worst they can say is no.
What are the agency security procedures?
The phone chat is a good time to flesh this most important aspect out. An agent who looks after you properly will lose a lot of business. That’s because she will insist on ID and a deposit from every client that wants to meet you. There are some clients who simply won’t provide these things. But a good agent puts your safety before her bank balance, and sends the screening refuser away with a flea in his ear. You will likely be more busy at an agency that does not screen, but you will not be anywhere near as safe. You have to weigh these things up and decide what is right for you. We screen everyone without fail at Lulu, even though we make less money because of it.
Expect to meet in person
At Lulu we meet everyone that we represent for a very informal interview / coffee. It makes sense. We will be trusting you with Lulu’s reputation, while you will be trusting us with your life. We must meet and in particular, you must feel comfortable with me (Lulu). Be wary of anyone who recruits you without a physical meeting.
How does the agency advertise?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions about marketing and SEO. How does the agency find clients, what will be done promote you etc? You may be tempted to ask how much work you will get, but the truth is income varies wildly between ladies within the same agency, a lot of it being down to you and how many regulars you can retain. The quality of your photos is also a big factor, and you can read more about the importance of great escort photos here.
Keep an eye on comms
You’re recruited and in, and your profile is up on the agency website. Now how is it going? Are the messages from the agent to you about work clear and concise. Is she giving you all the info you need in a timely manner? Is she checking you in to bookings, and acknowledging when you check out safely? Do clients praise the agency or moan about it incessantly? You need to be working with someone who is on-the-ball with comms at all times. Good comms keep you safe and stop your precious time being wasted.
Keep an eye on control
What is your agent’s policy on you working with other agencies or as an independent? Is it a blanket ban and a demand for exclusivity or is your agent more relaxed? And if you have social media such as Twitter, does your agent insist on having the login details and/or does she try and control how you use it and your access to others? Control is a red flag when it comes to the sex industry, consider carefully whether you wish to work with someone who uses threats/control.
Remember: if you do decide to leave your agency for whatever reason, they should be prompt not only in removing your photos from their website, but also every other website they have advertised you on. Do not be afraid to press them on this.
