Sugar Baby vs Escort – what’s the difference?
24/03/2022I remember thinking about becoming an escort when I was 19. This was circa 1999, and the internet as we know it was still in its relative infancy back then. In the UK, most escort agencies and brothels advertised in the back of the local paper rather than online, and it all seemed a little bit too….shady and unknown….for me to get involved in. Despite being pretty skint, I shelved the idea and got on with life and my poorly paid 9-5.
Seven years came and went, I’d bought a house with my boyfriend who had soon after left me with a huge mortgage. Now I was even more skint! My day job was dull and monotonous but due to personal circumstances (a young daughter), the idea of going to University and getting some qualifications to improve my lot seemed completely unobtainable. I revisited the idea of escorting again. This time, however, I was able to start my research online and by now the landscape had completely changed. Escort advertising directories had cropped up, and there were several high profile forums where independent escorts and escort agencies would come together to chat. It was now normal for men to search online for an escort, rather than in the paper or through cards in a phone box. Thanks to technology, I suddenly felt I could do this.
I began by reading just about anything and everything I could, whether that be blogs or books. I bought a guide on search engine optimisation and I built myself a little website. It was crap, but it worked. A couple of weeks after listing my website on various different escort directories, I got an email from a man called Richard. He wanted to book me for an hour for £150. Back then we didn’t screen or take deposits. It was case of making a judgement call based on gut instincts. I spoke to Richard on the phone and he sounded really rather nice so I agreed to the date.
The evening of the booking came and I was absolutely shitting myself. As I approached his front door the voice in my head was screaming at me to run. You’re fucking mad! it was telling me over and over. Get the fuck out of here. This is crazy. What are you doing?!
It took all my bottle to ignore my inner voice and knock on that front door. The door opened quickly, and a very short, sweet and clearly just as nervous man stood in front of me smiling. I smiled back and in I went.
It would not be an understatement to say that knocking on Richard’s front door that evening changed my life forever, and I don’t say that lightly. It was a knock that taught me not only that I could do this job, but also that I could do it well, and it would completely change my life financially in the process.
Leaving an hour later, I couldn’t quite believe that I had just earned £150 for doing something I had been giving away freely for years. While today £150 may not seem like a huge amount of money, to me in 2006 it was – it was two weeks food shopping.
I was lucky of course. Richard was a nice man who was gentle and kind. They are not all like Richard. But the good news is that nowadays it has become common place for men to provide ID and pay deposits, which means it’s much safer to work today than it ever was when I started. As more and more escorts have insisted on it and stuck to their guns, so the culture has started to shift. Certainly at the more expensive end of the market, all clients will expect to be screened in some way.
I have been in this industry ever since that first booking with Richard. I’ve been lucky in that I have always managed to pitch myself towards quality over quantity and that’s worked well for me. I have aimed myself towards a certain calibre of gentleman, which has meant I have worked smarter rather than harder over the years. And this is what the term high class boils down to. It doesn’t mean you, me, any of us are better or more worthy than other sex workers or indeed that we don’t offer exactly the same services. In reality it only means that we pitch ourselves to the market in a different way and, yep, charge more as a result.
I decided early on that I would be a low volume provider. I figured to do the job well I would need to be this way, or risk burnout. I also knew that physically, I couldn’t hack high volume. My props to the ladies who can – I hope you are rolling in cash.
Today the trend is shifting away from the term high class escorts due to its elitist nature, and even away from the term escort, instead favouring companion. At some point I may even phase it out of this website. But such is the nature of Google, that while people are searching for the term in volume, I will keep using it to promote Lulu Black agency.
